Gösselsdorf | 22.07.2009 |
There is a funny thing about triathlon culture in Austria: nobody wants to start in a drafting race (e.g. the olympic distance at Schwarzlsee next week got cancelled, since only 30 people registered), but drafting in "ordinary" races is very common.
As I started in Gösselsdorf last weekend, I found myself - after an average swim at best - in the middle of a ten men group after T1. As I and another Slovenian athlete got away during the first few kilometres and nobody could follow, I thought that I won't see any of these guys again. I was wrong about that..
Our lead after 20km was around 30sec, but the longer the race lasted, the more common drafting seemed to become. About 3km before T2 the group finally caught us, leaving me pretty demoralized as I saw athletes, who are obviously weak cyclists, passing me one after another.
Nevertheless I tried to be the first one in T2 and left a bit of a gap to the others with a fast transition. The run on the other hand felt extremely good and I caught up 75 seconds to the guy in front of me pretty easily and finished second overall.
Although I had the fastest run split of the day (and it didn't feel hard at all) I know, that I definitely have to focus on my swim performance over the next few weeks.

WCS Kitzbühel | 15.07.2009 |
I was able to watch two absolutely amazing races from the new World Championship Series in Kitzbühel.
Seeing the world elite race at first hand really gives you an idea what this sport is all about.

Regeneration week | 15.07.2009 |
As crazy and strange as it may sound, I think I make most performance
improvements during the regeneration weeks, such as the one I'm having right now. With the amount of training going down to about 60% and the intensity decreasing even more, it is the perfect time for my body to regenerate and get the right feeling back.
Still having two more or less smooth days left, I feel stronger every day and got my motivation and will back to do some really hard workouts again.
Anyway..
Tomorrow morning I will depart for Kitzbühel, where I will be spending the weekend watching the highly anticipated World Championship race. It's an amazing experience to see the world elite performing in an olympic distance event.
For those of you, who can't be there live, I can only recommend the TV coverage on ORF Sport Plus tomorrow.
My next races will be:
*) Gösselsdorf / sprint distance - 18.07
*) Udine / sprint distance - 26.07 (pool swim, drafting)
Best greetings!
