You can't run the race
The pace is too fast
You just won't last
Linkin Park
The event at the so called "Faaker See" lake last saturday was not only the carinthian olympic distance championship, top triathletes from whole europe stood at the start line too and made the race very fast.
With a water temperature of about 21°C wetsuits were allowed during the 1 round swim event, but I have to say, that it didn't help me much. Being completely alone shortly before the second buoy I couldn't see anything but water, had to swim blindly in any direction and lost at least one minute and the contact to the pack during the last stages of the swim.
I got out of the water after 25 long minutes (five minutes behind the leaders) on position 20, which meant, that I had to bike completely alone for the first 20 kilometres.
Afterwards I think I made up a few positions, but with so many age-group athletes being on the track it was impossible to say where I was really positioned and how big the differences were.
Finally the run was not too bad, but not too good either and so I managed to finish on position 15th overall and 6th in the carinthian championship.
I have to say that the whole race was - with a few expectations - very well organized and the course was pretty attractive.

Beijing 08 | 18.08.2008 |
If somebody would tell me how many hours I spent in front of the TV during the last few days watching Olympia, I think I wouldn't believe it and just call him crazy.
But with some of the most thrilling swimming races which I have ever seen, dozens of other interesting events and the track-and-field athletics just about to start I can't see any escape from this.
(I just hope that every hour that I spend in front of the TV instead of sitting on my bike will help me with my motivation during the long winter.)
P.S: Don't forget to watch the Elite Men's triathlon race tomorrow morning / 4:00am. (Just for the record: Simon Whitfield is my man ;))
P.P.S: Doping controls in Beijing:

Look out...I'm coming! | 18.08.2008 |
We all know it's not exaggerated to say that it is a bit late (if not to say last minute) to start into the season and bring the first acceptable results, but here I am - finally starting to hit the road.
With some motivation and training problems during July I felt very bad and even thought at one point to cancel the whole season and better start concentrating on the year 2009.
Today I thank anybody who is there to thank that I managed to make a 180 degrees turn and now I'm back in the game. Simply put: I had two amazing weeks of training and I loved it.
Even the first competition after this little "break-down" went very well (Velden Pago Sprint Triathlon) and with a solid performance in all three disciplines I finished in 10th place overall, 5th in the Carinthian championships and first in the Carinthian championships Under23.
Pictures will follow soon!

Gösselsdorf triathlon | 31.07.2008 |
With my stomach virus being gone for a week now and no problems so far, I decided to take part in another competition yesterday: the "Gösselsdorf Volkstriathlon".
This sprint-event (distances: 0,5/32/6,7) is a carinthian highlight with a very nice bike and run course. Furthermore I wanted to have an especially good race because it was my very first triathlon three years ago (wow, time flies).
Concerning the race:
This time the opening leg felt just fine (a little bit unexpected for me after having almost no training in the pool) and so I managed to get out of the water on position 3 or 4. With a very fast transition and great legs on the first twenty (windy) kilometres I even managed to make up some time on the guy in front of me.
From this moment on I felt the first symptoms of my sickness coming back and so a very big pack caught me at km 22-23. I almost got weaker minute by minute, which means that I even had problems staying at the back end of the group.
After T2 (3rd to 6th place) I tried running for about one km, but my stomach felt awful and I lost ground very quickly.
At the end I decided to stop the whole thing and throw in my towel which led to my second DNF within a few weeks.
Now one day after, I am still feeling weak and don't have the heart to do something the whole day.
Let's see how it develops!
I will keep you all updated!

Sickness | 31.07.2008 |
While watching the race of the Ironman Austria live last sunday, it looks like I
somehow caught a very bad stomach virus. It was very bad on Monday so I went straight
to the doctor, who ordered me to take one week off from work and training.
So basically the last few days I wasn't able to leave the house at all and just spent my
whole time lying in bed or on the sofa watching the Tour de France.
I'm feeling better right now (that's why I'm able to write this news entry) and I'm definitely looking forward to go back to work and training tomorrow!

Company triathlon | 01.08.2008 |

With a tactical masterpiece and a glorious finish the "Ingenieurbüro Michl Racing Team" - consisting of Thomas Jandl (swim), my humble self (bike) and Christoph Lorber (run) - won the UPC Company Triathlon Challenge in Klagenfurt yesterday.
During the race and especially in the first two disciplines we mostly lost the contact to the top (third place in T1, ex-aequo second in T2), but with a minimisation of the time difference, two very fast transitions and a brilliant fight until the end (Christoph caught up 50 seconds on 3 kilometres) we managed to finish in first place with a time of 30:43.
