Knittelfeld OD | 30.06.2008
Had a not so good race again yesterday (02:04:xx / 14th place overall / good swim
and bike, very bad run), but I just started my 2 months "holiday job"
today, so you guys have to wait for some updates until tomorrow.

Kuchl OD | 27.06.2008
Last saturday (due to lots of university work, I wasn't able to make an update 'til today) I
had my first olympic distance for this season on the schedule.

The training during the last four weeks wasn't exactly perfect: at first I decided to take one
week off to make all my exams and other time-consuming processes, but now it's the
fifth week in a row with only half the usual training (but definitely the last!).
Considering this, I expected to finish about 4-5 minutes slower than usual,
but I didn't even come that far.

Let's start from the beginning:
The swim consisted of 2 rounds in a rather small and unusually cold lake (wetsuits
allowed). I wanted to start in the middle right next to all the favourites, but minute after
minute I slowly drifted away until I stood in the middle of the age-groupers finally. I
wasn't able to get away quickly, which meant that there was no normal swimming possible
for the whole first round (some guys can seriously go into wrestling or something...).
The second half was alright then and so I managed to come out of the water on position 18.

I felt great on the bike and so I found myself in position 7 right after the turning point at
km 19. But then with about 12-13 kilometers to go and having great legs for the run, I
heard the sound which every triathlete hates the most: the "pffffhhh"¯ of a flat tire!
DNF really sucks!

But what can you do?
A flat tire can happen anytime!

With my last university exam on friday, I hope that I will be able to have a good
competition this sunday (OD / Knittelfeld)!

Wish me better luck this time!

Way to go! | 09.06.2008
You know, I've been a big fan of Simon Whitfield for a long time now, but his performance
at the world champs today was really awesome even for him. Getting on the bike
10sec before everyone else if you're not really known as a swimmer means he did
some great work and is absolutely my man for the Beijing games.

There's still no way to beat Gomez though...

Gotta go now - need some sleep!

Back to normal | 07.06.2008
You know, it doesn't happen very often, that I spent five consecutive days without
sitting on my bike once. But the weather-god didn't want me to, so I had to adept
my training a bit which made me feel quite uncomfortable.

But now everythings back to normal (thank god) and it was kinda cool taking
a ride today being about 2-3 kms away from a thunderstorm the whole
time without getting wet.

2 weeks left until my first olympic distance race this year..

laughter without sorrow, sun without rain,
but he did promise strength for the day,
comfort for the tears, and light for the way."

Surfing the internet | 06.06.2008
With 2.5-3 kilometres still being the maximum I am able to swim right now
without my hands falling of and running still seeming impossible,
I have a lot of unusual time to surf the internet for example.

Found a couple of great sites today and thought I may as well share them with you.

http://www.triathlon.org/olympics/
ITU made up a really awesome site about the two olympic triathlon races.
Especially the feature called "Olympic Odyssey" by Chris Hill where he
analyses the strongest athletes is absolutely worth reading.
(In particular the articles about Kahlefeldt and Gomez - sounds cool
racing against a horse all the time...)

Blog by Simon Whitfield.
Nearly daily upates about his whole life in and out of sports.
(alright, I know that one's a little bit longer..)

Call it a day | 02.06.2008
Quoted from a sports medicine article:

"While there is often little or no blood loss from an abrasion, there can be
a great deal of pain because of the many nerve endings that are exposed."

Yeah, well..

On one side I can't sit still for more than 30 minutes, but on the
other hand doing some exercise actually lessens the pain.
(never had an injury before which made me train even more...lol)

Bad race day | 03.06.2008
After having a bike crash yesterday afternoon (NEVER draft behind someone who panics
at the slightest irregularity) with a lot of skin-abrasions on the whole right leg and
what looks like two confusions (german: Prellungen) on both shoulders,
I wasn't sure to even start the race today,

But I did and all in all it went far better than I dared to hope (5th place overall), but I
definitely couldn't give 100% in the swim and the run was even more painful.

Besides this "primary pain" I was stupid enough not to look at the course profile
in detail and so I was completely surprised of the very hilly bike course and the
120 meters altitude (!!) on a 5km run loop.
(with about 30-35 degrees celcius air temperature in the shadow)
Why not start at the bottom of Mount Everest next time?^^

Now after being hydrated in a cool place again, I'm not sure how my injuries will develop
over the next week and what and how much training I will be able to do without pain.
Definitely there will be no competitions for a while now and I want to do a good and
intense training block over the whole month of June.

Final results (750 - 26 - 5):
#1 Prüller, Rainer 01:10:36
#2 Klaftenegger, Achim 01:12:02
#3 Moser, Othman 01:14:56
#4 Monetti, Andreas 01:15:16
#5 Scherwitzl, Boris 01:15:52

5 minutes?
I mean the guy could have a coffee-break or two until I showed up!
